Dynamic Optimization (DO) in SC 2012 VMM Explained

Check out this nice post for Dynamic Optimization on SCVMM team blog.

Disaster Recovery Solution with Orchestrator

Windows Server 2012 has out of the box a disaster recovery solution for virtual machines named Hyper-V Replica. Unfortunately this solution is not automated but luckily you can automate this solution whatever you like with System Center 2012 Orchestrator. Charles Joy from MSFT even offers free runbooks to the community to make that disaster recovery automated. He made two scenarios – one without using the other System Center components and other where he uses SCSM to initiate the failover. Actually the solution is documented with documents and video. You can directly implement the runbooks in your environment or you can change them to fit your needs. It is up to you to make the logic. The solution is pretty fast and most important free if you have Windows Server 2012 and Orchestrator 2012. I’ve seen a solutions for Disaster Recovery that cost a significant amount of money and in the end they are hard to configure, 1 of 3 cases failed during failover and have certain limitations. So I suggest grab this solution from here and make your Disaster Recovery.

Dynamic Memory for Linux Virtual Machines in Hyper-V

There is a rumor that Microsoft is working on dynamic memory for Linux virtual machines with some solid proofs. Last night there was MVA Jump Start “Introduction to Hyper-V” and as always there was an open Q&A section where you can ask a question and experts and MVPs answer. During the whole session I’ve asked one question until I’ve received an answer from MVP Cédric Bravo:

So to my interpretation we can expect dynamic memory for Linux virtual machines in the coming several months.

New MPs: System Center 2012 Management Pack for Windows Server Hyper-V 2012 and two more

It is here. Probably one of the most wanted and waited management packs – Windows Server Hyper-V 2012. On the download page the MP promises the following features:

  • Management of critical Hyper-V services that affect virtual machines and host server functionality
  • Management of host server logical disks that affect virtual machine health
  • Full representation of virtualization in a single Hyper-V host server, including virtual networks, and virtual machines
  • Monitoring of virtual machine hardware components that affect availability

This MP is only supported on SCOM 2012 or later. The documentation can be found in the installation folder after you install the MP. I’ve took a quick look at the documentation it is not long just 20 pages but it is good to read. Let’s hope there are no critical bugs in the MP because of the tight schedule of SC 2012 SP1. Download link is here.

Along with this MP several days ago two more MPs were released

Microsoft continues the battle with VMware with more videos from MVA about SC 2012 SP1 and Hyper-V

Uploaded just a minutes ago there are new videos from MVA on TechNet. The videos compare Microsoft technologies with VMware technologies. Previous MVA released such course with videos where Hyper-V was compared with ESXi and vSphere. Now we can see the same approach with Microsoft Private Cloud over the VMware vCloud compare and by Microsoft Private Cloud it is meant freshly released System Center 2012 SP1:

Obviously Microsoft is determined to win this battle or at least to show that they are all in the Private Cloud.

More videos were added to compare Hyper-V with VMware vSphere 5.1:
